ANOTHER NO-NO
Timbers get second straight 0-0 shutout tonight in Seattle
The Timbers went north for their first road match of the 2008 season, coming off a 0-0 draw at home on Thursday night that saw them drop their first point of the season. After enduring early Seattle pressure, including an open-net chance from 6 yards out that Seattle's Andre Schmid managed to miss, the Timbers tightened up their defense and came out of Seattle with a point. The Timbers now have three wins and two draws in five matches, and their 11 points has them still atop the USL First Division table while Seattle is 1-1-2 with 5 points and tied for seventh.

Timbers get another shutout, but can't find net either, draw 0-0 with Rochester
Well, the good news for Timbers fans is that they got another shutout from the Timbers to start the season, their third in four matches. They also extended their unbeaten home streak to 18 regular season matches, and 24 home matches overall. But the bad news is the Timbers couldn't score either, so the result is a 0-0 draw with the Rochester Rhinos. The Rhinos would control possession for much of the first half, but the Timbers found new life against tired Rochester legs late in the match, but though they had many good chances, including a wide-open shot from Chris Brown from seven yards out with 13 minutes to go, the Timbers just couldn't score and have to be satisfied with the point. The Rhinos have yet to score in their season, having been shut out in their first three matches.

Timbers to host Italian side for second year in a row
The Timbers announced today that they will be hosting an Italian team again this season, as Juventus Primavera will visit PGE Park on June 14 at 7:00pm. Juventus Primavera competes in Italy’s Campionato Primavera, which are the top youth teams from each of Italy’s Serie A and B clubs. They are currently in first place in the league’s Group A.
The Timbers hosted AC Milan Primavera on June 19, 2007 (who play in the same league as Juventus Primavera) and after a 1-1 regulation match, defeated AC Milan 4-1 in penalties in front of 11,092 fans at PGE Park.

Takayuki Suzuki is USL First Division Player of the Week
For his spectacular goal against Seattle, and assisting on the second goal later that evening, Timbers forward Takayuki Suzuki was given the honor of United Soccer Leagues First Division Player of the Week! Goalkeeper Ray Burse, defender Scot Thompson, and midfielder Shaun Higgins were also honored on being on the Team of the Week with Suzuki. Congratulations to all of them!
Taka also earns "Goal of the Week" honors for his stunning strike against Seattle.

Timbers brush off Seattle challenge
Suzuki, Guante score in 2-0 shutout
Off to a 2-0 start, the Timbers hosted traditional rival Seattle tonight, on a beautiful night at PGE Park. On the first shot of the match, Takayuki Suzuki blasted a dipping shot just under the bar to put the Timbers up 1-0. After withstanding Seattle pressure that kept the defenders and goalkeeper Ray Burse busy but not seriously challenged, Suzuki played a nice pass to Miguel Guante and he beat Seattle keeper Chris Eylander in the 76th minute for the 2-0 win. The Timbers sit atop the USL First Division with nine points in three matches and are idle until hosting the Rochester (not-so-raging) Rhinos on May 8.

Shaun'ed!
Shaun Higgins has winner in 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Thunder
In a match that went back and forth like a prize fight at times, the Timbers would attack Minnesota from the outset, and it paid off early with a 9th minute goal by Chris Brown, his second of the season. Minnesota would respond just before halftime after a Timbers defensive breakdown, but Shaun Higgins would get a great feed from Andrew Gregor and deftly tap in the ball to slip just inside the post of the Thunder goal for the 2-1 win. The match also saw the first guest mascot of the post Timber-Jim era, as Joey Webber would wield the chainsaw on this night.

One for Timber Jim!
Chris Brown's goal all the Timbers need in 1-0 win
Tonight at PGE Park, the Portland Timbers opened their eighth season in the United Soccer Leagues against the Puerto Rico Islanders, and after a typically tough match, which saw a Puerto Rico player sent off for an elbow to the head of Justin Thompson, the Timbers finally broke through in the 71st minute when Chris Brown hit a hard shot from 30 yards out that Puerto Rico goalkeeper Bill Gaudette couldn't handle and it slipped through to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead, which would hold out for the shutout victory. The Timbers drew 10,977 for the season opener, the most for a season opening match since they drew 12,295 in their first ever USL match in 2001.
The game also marked the final match for Timbers icon Timber Jim, who retired after first picking up the chainsaw 30 years ago during the Timbers NASL days. Jim was honored all during the night, and the match report and photo gallery are posted below.

Also, this week, I have written a four-part diary of some of my favorite Timber Jim memories. As I have only lived in Portland since 1997, my memories are only of the USL-era of the Timbers that began in 2001. But as a soccer fan since the 1970's, I knew of Timber Jim back then, and feel fortunate to been able to get to know him so well over the past seven years.

Timbers draw, Burse injury not serious
The Timbers drew the University of Portland Pilots 1-1 at Merlo Field, with a second half goal by Cameron Knowles holding up until the 89th minute when the Pilots leveled in what was a very chippy affair, with five yellow cards and one red card (to Shaun Higgins) being given out. But they nearly suffered a major blow to their 2008 season as goalkeeper Ray Burse was injured by a hard tackle by a Pilot forward deep into second half stoppage time and was carried off the pitch, unable to put weight on his left leg. But Burse was back in camp this week and appears to have recovered from the injury.

Timbers formalize loan of Dallas GK
FC Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse, who has been in camp off-and-on with the Timbers in pre-season, has been signed as a loan player for the 2008 season. Burse played all 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes at the University of Portland on March 28, and has also been seeing time for Dallas as a reserve keeper during this time. Burse can be recalled by Dallas at any time, by the terms of the deal.

Two possible new players from NZ
Lots being thrown into the "Timber Mill" today, with a New Zealand soccer message board being the source of two new possible signings, which may fit into the rumors of a new player from New Zealand being signed soon, of a new midfielder and a young speedy forward.
Bryan Little is a Scottish player currently on the roster of Auckland City FC of the New Zealand Football Championship though recovering from knee surgery. Their season is over so he could be in Portland soon.
Benjamin Totori is from the Solomon Islands, a 22-year old striker currently playing for Waitakere United in the same league as Little. Waitakere won the regular season title by beating Little's team today, and now play in a post-season tournament that will extend to the first weekend in May.

Timbers top Gonzaga 1-0
Two days after a 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes at the University of Portland, the Timbers moved west to Forest Grove to take on the Gonzaga University Bulldogs, but still had to deal with freaky weather as they would play through rain, sleet, and hail, as well as another torn jersey (and still no call) but would pull out a 1-0 victory on a second half goal by Neil Dombrowski.
Midfielder Tom Taylor is back in camp after time in Puerto Rico, and saw action late in the match, as did recently re-signed Justin Thompson.
MARCH 28, 2008
Timbers fall 2-1 to Earthquakes
The Portland Timbers took on the expansion San Jose Earthquakes from Major League Soccer tonight at the University of Portland's Merlo Field, and after two defensive lapses gave the Earthquakes two early goals, the Timbers fought back and had many close chances, including a header from Lawrence Olum off the crossbar. The Timbers pulled to within 2-1 on a second half goal by new defender Tim Karalexis, but though they had many chances to draw level, they weren't able to find the net again and fell to the Earthquakes 2-1. The Timbers continue their preseason on Sunday at Pacific University against Gonzaga University.
Earlier in the evening, the University of Portland men's team defeated the Earthquakes reserves 1-0.

Timbers bring back 2007 coaching staff
The Portland Timbers announced today that they are bringing back their full coaching staff from the 2007 team. Assistant coaches Jim Brazeau, Jim Rilatt and Rod Underwood will all return next year, with Rilatt and Underwood returning for their second seasons in Portland, while Brazeau has been with the Timbers as goalkeeper coach every year except for the 2006 season.
MARCH 20, 2008
Whitecaps defeat "Timbers" 4-0 in scrimmage
The Timbers had their first "official" scrimmage today vs. the Vancouver Whitecaps in Tukwila, WA. It's unclear how many regular Timbers players took part, though there are indications that at least a few signed players played, but the Timbers issued no official press release on the match, and the Whitecaps report did not mention any of the Timbers players. It's likely that most of the current signees who are in camp saw action, but also likely that the match was mostly for coach Gavin Wilkinson to get a look at trialists in action against USL-level competition.
MARCH 7, 2008
Timbers sign Ivory Coast midfielder
The Portland Timbers announced today the signing of midfielder Arsene Oka. Oka is a native of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and was a member of the nation’s U-17 and U-20 National Teams. He was a member of the New England Revolution in 2007, playing in six Reserve Division matches and one match for the MLS first team. With the signing, the Timbers are up to 17 players signed for the 2008 season.
MARCH 7, 2008
Training camp opens next week
The Timbers will open their 2008 training camp on March 10 at PGE Park. The players will get their first chance to play on the brand-new Field Turf as the 17 signed players report, along with trialists looking for a shot at the remaining spots on the Timbers roster.
FEBRUARY 28, 2008
Timbers add second keeper
The Portland Timbers announced today that they have acquired goalkeeper Jordan James. James has USL experience with Second Division clubs Wilmington (2005) and Cincinnati (2006) and spent the 2007 season as a member of the MLS-champion Houston Dynamo reserve team, where he played in two matches. The signing of James brings the number of players signed for 2008 to sixteen, with two goalkeepers (along with Josh Wicks) now on the roster.
FEBRUARY 12, 2008
Josh Wicks returns for 2008
Timbers goalkeeper Josh Wicks, who was 2007 USL First Division Goalkeeper of the Year in his first year with the Timbers, has signed for the 2008 season. Wicks, who had a league-leading 0.60 goals-against average last year, had 14 shutouts and only gave up 16 goals in 27 games, and his signing brings the total number of players signed for 2008 to fifteen.
Timber Jim to retire after April 17 opener
Timbers icon Timber Jim Serrill has announced that he will retire after the April 17 season opener at PGE Park against Puerto Rico. Jim has been a familiar face at Timbers games since 1978 and is recognized as being the most familiar Timbers supporters. But he will fire up his chainsaw for the last time during the season opener, as the Timbers fans have one last chance to thank him for being the heart and soul of soccer in Portland.

PGE Park to get new turf for 2008
Four Fox Soccer Channel games announced
The Timbers announced today that there will be new Field Turf put down at PGE Park to replace the original NeXturf which has been used since the PGE Park renovation was completed in 2001. The NeXturf surface has degraded badly in the past several years so the new surface will be a welcome change, and likely to improve the chances for bringing in high-quality opponents for exhibitions in 2008 and beyond. And a new article today in the Portland Tribune talks with Coach Gavin Wilkinson about the upcoming season, and his thoughts on 2007.

| Portland is "Soccer City USA" |
Portland was known as "Soccer City USA" during the heyday of the Timbers in the 1970's, and has maintained that reputation, even without a professional team calling the city home for several years. After a US National Team 1-0 victory over Costa Rica at Civic Stadium in 1997, the players described the fans as the best the US National Team had ever seen. That excitement returned to Portland in 2001 as the newest member of the A-League, the Portland Timbers, had the 2nd highest attendance in the league, had two crowds over 11,000, and advanced to the second round of the playoffs in their first year.
