JULY 26, 2007 Dominating but drawn, Silverbacks hold Timbers to 0-0 tie The Timbers put on one of their better performances of the season on Thursday night against Atlanta, constantly peppering the Silverbacks goal with a total of 17 shots, but despite dominating the match for most of the 90 minutes, the Timbers never managed to break through, and had to settle for a 0-0 draw in front of 6,598 at PGE Park. The Timbers debuted new forward Matt Taylor in this match, and it took less than a minute for the new striker to get a chance, when a pass from Andrew Gregor had Taylor with a good look from 25 yards out, but his hard shot was smothered by Atlanta goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh. Taylor had another great chance in the 9th minute and came within inches of giving the Timbers lead when his blast from near the top of the box hit the crossbar, and the Timbers were not able to convert on the rebound and the ball was cleared. Atlanta would get their first good chance of the match in the 13th minute when a ball into former Timber Dan Antoniuk had the striker get a good chance with a quick turn about eight yards out, but this shot was well over the bar when he probably had more time to shoot than he thought. The home side would have another great chance to take the lead in the 26th minute when a free kick from Gregor was dummied by Luke Kreamalmeyer and was right to a charging Leonard Griffin, whose low blast from the top of the box appeared to deflect on it’s way towards net, and was smothered by a nice save by McIntosh. The last good chance of the half for either team would be in the 31st minute when an Atlanta free kick from 25 yards out by Luis Liendo deflected on it’s way to goal but was smothered by Timbers goalkeeper Josh Wicks, in what would probably be the best Silverbacks scoring chance on the night. The half would end with the teams tied 0-0. The Timbers came out with even more fire in the second half, and 10 minutes into the second half, a run down the left side from Griffin produced a great cross to the head of Chris Bagley, whose header from eight yards out was kept out only by a spectacular diving save by McIntosh. Then, on the ensuing corner kick from Gregor, Bagley once again got his head to the ball, and put his header over McIntosh this time and it was cleared out by Atlanta defender Alvin Hudson who appeared to be beyond the endline when it was cleared, so if the ball didn’t clear the line it was only inches away, but the assistant referee kept his flag down, and the threat was cleared. In the 70th minute, Bagley had another good chance when he had a good look at goal from near the top of the box, but his hard shot was just barely a yard over the bar. The only real sniff of goal the Silverbacks would get in the second half was in the 75th minute, when pass found Antoniuk just inside the top of the box, but his attempt to do a quick turn ended up in a weak mis-hit when he did have an open look at net. About three minutes later, two great Timbers chances went begging when a blast from the top of the box by David Hague, who had just entered the match, was stopped only by a great diving save by McIntosh, and the Silverbacks keeper reacted quickly enough to just snare the ball before it was headed in by a diving Gregor. The last good Timbers chance would come in the 87th minute when a bending corner kick from Gregor nearly snuck into the net, but McIntosh was able to punch it back out, and the Silverbacks defense managed to hold up while getting outshot 17-8 to secure the point on the road in a 0-0 draw. Josh Wicks was credited with just the one save on the first half free kick but earned his ninth shutout of the season, while Ryan McIntosh recorded eight saves for the Silverbacks.
