Timbers flare out with 2-0 loss to end season The Portland Timbers, who entered tonight's match against the Atlanta Silverbacks tied for last place in the USL First Division, had little on the line except pride tonight, against a Silverbacks team pushing towards a playoff berth. But after an early Timbers penalty kick was saved, the Silverbacks would eventually find the net twice, both goals being scored by Machel Millwood as the Silverbacks ended the Timbers season on a down note, a 2-0 loss in front of 6,163 at Portland's PGE Park. The home Timbers looked like they were going to jump out to an early lead, when after controlling the first few minutes of the match, they were awarded a penalty kick when Silverbacks goalkeeper Felipe Quintero was called for a foul on Mamba Chisoni in the box. Byron Alvarez stepped up to take the PK, but his shot to the left side of the net was guessed correctly by Quintero and saved to prevent the Timbers from taking the early lead. Three minutes later, the Silverbacks had their first good chance to take the lead when a corner kick got through the Timbers box and was sent just wide right by Machel Millwood. In the 15th minute, Atlanta would get another good opportunity when Warren Ukah slipped in behind the Timbers defense and had a one-on-one with Timbers goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin, but Elfvin made a diving save to his left as he charged out from his line. The Silverbacks would get the next good chance when in the 28th minute, off a cross from George Beute, Millwood's header from 10 yards out was just over the Timbers bar. Three minutes later, Ukah would have another good chance for the Silverbacks when his low shot from 15 yards out was kept out by a kick save from Elfvin. One minute later, it was the Timbers threatening when a ball was played back to Quintero but bounced too much for his liking, and he had to jump to kick the ball clear, just beating Timbers defender Mike Randolph to the ball. One minute later, in the 32nd minute, the Silverbacks would take the lead when Anthony McManus worked the ball through the middle of the Timbers defense, drawing Elfvin off his line before slipping a pass to Millwood, who barely kept the ball on his foot and had to reach to poke the ball towards net, but he got just enough of the ball to get it into the Timbers net, and the Silverbacks had a 1-0 lead. The Timbers had a great chance to level the score five minutes later when Alvarez fought off several Silverbacks defenders and hit a low shot from 10 yards out that was blocked by Quintero, who had to react quickly to react to a rebound shot from Luke Kreamalmeyer, which he managed to smother and knock over the endline. It would be the last good scoring chance of the half, and the visitors held a 1-0 lead at the break. Four minutes into the second half, the Timbers had a golden opportunity to tie the score when a pass from Chisoni found Mike Chabala wide open just at the top of the box, but Chabala's shot was right at the Atlanta keeper and easily saved. In the 52nd minute, the Timbers were threatening again when a Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar shot from 25 yards out was only kept out by a nice tip over the bar by Quintero. In the 61st minute, Chisoni had his own opportunity to bring the Timbers level when he slipped in behind the Silverbacks defense, but his shot from 20 yards out was tipped wide by Quintero. After withstanding about 35 minutes of Timbers domination as they pushed for an equalizer, the Silverbacks took advantage of the Timbers aggressiveness in the 70th minute when Millwood intercepted a pass about 45 yards out from the Timbers goal, and with nobody between him and the net, he broke to the top of the box and chipped past a charging Elfvin as he reached the top of the box and into the open net to give the Silverbacks a 2-0 lead. Elfvin was injured on the play as he and Millwood collided just after the ball was released, and Elfvin would be replaced by Josh Saunders for the remainder of the match. Saunders would be called on to make a few spectacular saves in the final few minutes to keep the deficit at two goals, first in the 83rd minute on a shot from Fabian Dawkins, then in stoppage time on a shot from George Liam. In between the Timbers would get a favorable bounce off the crossbar as a shot from David Hayes would rebound off the bar at right to Saunders. As the match entered stoppage time, the Timbers Army, which numbered about 800 despite the meaningless game, lit up with 10 flares at the center of the section, and after the match, the team was given a rousing barrage of cheers as they did their lap around the field and thanked the fans for their support. The Timbers also auctioned off their jerseys from the match to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, with some of the jerseys fetching over $150 each, and each player signing the jersey and personally presenting it to the fan on the pitch after the match. Felipe Quintero was credited with five saves in the winning effort, while the Timbers keepers also recorded five saves, with three being credited to Bayard Elfvin and two to Josh Saunders.
