AUGUST 7, 2010 | Baton Rouge tops Reading in shootout to win PDL Consolation Final In the Premier Development League Consolation final, there would be four first half goals, with CJ Sapong and Luke Mulholland scoring for Reading United AC, and Joe Tait scoring for the Baton Rouge Capitals, along with a Reading own goal, but after a scoreless second half it would take penalties before Baton Rouge would emerge with a 4-2 shootout win to take third place in the 2010 PDL playoffs. Reading would threaten very early, with Luke Mulholland stealing the ball from a Baton Rouge defender in the first minute, and only a good save from Joe Hart kept Reading from taking the early lead. But it would only take one minute more for Reading to take that lead, when CJ Sapong weaved through the defense, and slipped the ball past a diving Hart and just inside the right post to give Reading a 1-0 lead. In the 10th and 11th minutes, Reading would get two more good chances, with Mulholland's shot from the top of the box being smothered by Hart, and then giving a near-assist to Sapong a minute later, with a low shot requiring a diving save by Hart. On the ensuing corner kick, Ged Quinn got his head on the ball but it was just wide left. Baton Rouge would threaten for the first time in the 12th minute, when Justin Portillo had a good look from the top of the box, but his shot was right at Reading keeper Jeremy Vuolo and easily saved. In the 25th minute, Baton Rouge would tie the match up with a lot of help from Reading, when a cross by Scott McCubbin from the right side was knocked into his own net by defender Matt Hedges. But three minutes later, Reading was in the lead again when Mulholland knocked home a loose ball after a rebound into the left side of the net, to give Reading United a one goal lead again, at 2-1. In the 37th minute, Reading's Sapong had a good look at an open side of the Baton Rouge net but missed wide. One minute later, it was Reading's Evans Frimpong with a good look, but was just high and wide from 25 yards out. Frimpong would have another good look from the top of the box a minute later, but a diving save by Hart would keep the ball out of the net. In the 42nd minute, Reading's Sapong would have another good chance after he made a nice diagonal run, but his shot would be just over the bar from close in. But in first half stoppage time, Baton Rouge would draw level when Tom Settle found Joe Tait making a nice run down the middle of the Reading defense, and Tait would slip the shot just inside the right post from 18 yards out, and at that half, the score would be level at 2-2. Four minutes into the second half it was Reading's Levi Houapeu with a good look at the top of the box, but his shot was right at the keeper and easily saved. Two minutes later, Baton Rouge had a great chance to take the lead when center referee Desmond Miller called for a penalty kick after a Reading foul in the box, but Ben Callon hit the crossbar with his attempt, after having sent Vuolo the wrong way, and the great chance was missed. In the 54th minute, Reading's Eric Detzel had a good chance after a run into the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by Hart. Eight minutes later, it was Chris Williams with a good chance for Reading to re-take the lead, but a sliding block by Tait ruined the opportunity. Two minutes later, Tait would have a good chance to give the Capitals their first lead of the night, but his shot from 20 yards out was just over the bar. Five minutes later, the Capitals had another good chance when Settle had an open look inside the box, but this shot was blocked by a retreating Andrew Wenger. Tait had a similar chance in the 70th minute as he made another good run to the top of the box, but once again, his shot was high and did not threaten the Reading goal. The last good chance in regulation for either team would be in the 73rd minute, when Baton Rouge's McCubbin slipped in behind the Reading defense for a moment, but Vuolo was up to the challenge and made the solid save. After 90 minutes of regulation play and three minutes stoppage time, the Consolation match went right to penalties. After Baton Rogue's Tait scored to open the shootout, Reading's Jack Reid had his shot saved. Settle and Houapeu would both score in the second round, and Baton Rouge's Portillo and Reading's Wenger would convert in the third round. In the fourth round, both Baton Rouge's Williams and Reading's Mullholland would miss, leaving Callon the chance to make up for his earlier miss, which he did, giving Baton Rouge the Consolation victory, and a 3rd place finish for the 2010 season. Joe Hart would record six saves for Baton Rouge, while Jeremy Vuolo had four saves for Reading.
