The Portland Timbers and the California Victory are no doubt getting tired of seeing each other, but the Timbers would also probably not mind playing the Victory every night as for the fourth time in four matches against the Victory, the Timbers would get the win, and get a shutout, as they defeated the Victory 1-0 on a goal by Bryan Jordan in front of 6,332 at PGE Park.

Three minutes into the match, it would be the Timbers with the first good chance, as a pass from Bryan Jordan had Chris Bagley in alone on Victory goalkeeper Eric Reed, but Bagley’s attempt to go for the lower right corner was stopped by a nice kick save by Reed. About a minute later, off an Andrew Gregor free kick, Portland’s Lawrence Olum would get his head on the cross, but the shot was easily saved by Reed.

In the 19th minute, the Victory would see their best scoring chance of the half when an acrobatic pass from former Timber Yuri Morales found Federico Bianchi wide open with time at the top of the box, but his shot did not have the pace it should, and Timbers goalkeeper Josh Wicks dove slightly to his left to smother the shot.

In the 28th minute, the Timbers had their best chance of the half and were unlucky not to score when at the top of the Victory box, Shaun Higgins played a back-heel to Bagley, whose quick blast from 18 yards was stopped only by a brilliant diving save to the left by Reed, who then had to recover to smother the rebound shot from point blank range by Jordan.

The last good chance of the half would go the Timbers, as Jordan was able to make a deep run into the California box just before halftime, but his shot would go into the left side netting, and the half would end with the teams scoreless.

The first good chance of the second half went to the Timbers, with Gregor going straight for goal on a free kick from 25 yards out, but Reed was right there to snare the ball. A few minutes later, the Victory had a good chance when Hugo Castillas made a nice run to the top of the box, but put his shot just high and wide to the left.

But a few minutes after that, the Timbers would make the chances finally pay off when in the 52nd minute, off a quick release from Wicks, Scot Thompson made a nice run down the right side, made a quick cross from near the corner of the box, to the foot of Jordan, who trapped the ball into a high bounce on the turf, but none of the three California defenders that were nearby could find the ball before Jordan was back on it, and he put the shot into the lower left corner past a charging Reed for the 1-0 lead.

The Timbers were satisfied to attempt to keep more control of the ball to protect their lead, but the visitors nearly stole a goal in the 68th minute when Juan Epitie made a nice diagonal run towards the Timbers post, but his only option was to shoot and he put the shot into the right side netting ,with Wicks having covered the post.

The Timbers got one last chance to widen their lead in the 86th minute when a pass from Kiki Lara had David Hague making a nice turn about 10 yards out, put could not put the shot on net as he shot wide left.

But if the Timbers thought their lead was safe, the Victory still had one trick left in their bag that nearly cost the Timbers a win when in the 87th minute, Aaron Chandler pushed in past the last defender as he received the diagonal pass, and had an open if tight-angled shot from only a few yards out, but Wicks charged off his line and smothered the golden scoring opportunity as the ball deflected back out and out of danger.

The Victory had a few late corner kicks that did not result in any shots on goal, and the Timbers made their one goal stand for their fourth straight shutout win overall, fourth straight shutout win over the Victory, and maintain their undefeated record at home.

Josh Wicks recorded two saves in the win, while Eric Reed has six saves in the losing effort.
