Early Battery goal holds up in 1-0 Timbers loss For the second straight match, Timbers fans would see few scoring chances in a fairly even match, but the result would also be the same, as the Timbers would drop a 1-0 result, this time against the Charleston Battery in front of 5,112 at Portland's PGE Park. The Timbers nearly grabbed an early lead in the first minute when Mamba Chisoni found Byron Alvarez in the box, but his shot from 15 yards out was blocked off his foot by a Battery defender. Just three minutes later, the Battery would make their first scoring chance pay off when Jordan Hughes found Stephen Armstrong making a run into the top of the box, and Armstrong beat Timbers goalkeeper Martin Hutton from 12 yards out to give the Battery a 1-0 lead. In the 15th minute, the Timbers had a golden opportunity to level the score when Ronnie Silva crossed to Alvarez, who had to jump slightly to shoot towards an open Battery net, but his shot from 10 yards out was just over the bar. Less than a minute later, Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggins nearly gave away a goal when his attempted clearance was blocked by Timbers forward Luke Kreamalmeyer, but fortunately for Wiggins, the ball bounced a yard wide left of the post. Seconds later, Chisoni was once again attacking the Battery net, but his shot from just inside the corner box was blocked wide by a Battery defender. The Timbers controlled much of possession in the first half, but the Battery did get one good chance after their early goal, when in the 19th minute a shot from Isaac Okoye was cleared from in front of the Timbers goal by Chisoni off a corner kick. Though the home side did control much of play for the remainder of the half, that Okoye shot would be the last shot on goal for either team in the half, and it would end with the Battery holding a 1-0 lead. In the 64th minute, the Timbers had a good chance to level the score when a give-and-go between Yuri Morales and Alvarez gave Morales a good open shot, but his shot from 8 yards out was tipped wide by a save from Wiggins. Eight minutes later, Kreamalmeyer would have another good chance when he briefly had an open look from 15 yards out, but his shot was deflected wide off a Charleston defender. Each team would put a few more shots towards net, but none ever threatened to make it into the net and when the final whistle blew, the Timbers had dropped another 1-0 result, and now find themselves tied with the Minnesota Thunder at the bottom of the USL First Division table. Martin Hutton and Keith Wiggins were each credited with one save on the night.
