Chris Brown strike lone goal in Timbers 1-0 win over Juventus Primavera After six straight matches at home without a win, the Portland Timbers hoped an exhibition against Italy’s Juventus Primavera would return them to their winning ways, and in a wide-open and entertaining match, Portland’s Chris Brown would find the goal in the 24th minute, and it would hold up as the Timbers would defeat their Italian visitors 1-0 in front of a crowd of 8,135 at Portland’s PGE Park. In what would be a free flowing match with lots of shots on goal, it was Juventus who would have the first dangerous run, when Simone Serino slipped though and made a nice run on a long pass, that Portland Timbers goalkeeper Jordan James had to come off his line to block the point-blank shot near the edge of the box. Shortly afterwards, the Timbers would have their own good chance, as forward Chris Bagley made a nice run down the center of the pitch to the top of the box, but his shot was blocked by Juventus defender Ivan Mignano and cleared. The Timbers were finding space early down the middle of the pitch, and midfielder Bryan Little was able to make a similar run to Bagley’s in the 9th minute, but his blast from 25 yards out was stopped by Juventus goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio. In the 11th minute, Bagley had another nice run as he stole the ball from Raffaele Alciblade, and had a breakaway against the Juventus keeper, but he could not keep the ball close enough and Pinsoglio was able to come off his line and smother the ball. Five minutes later, Juventus forward Oussama Essabr made a dangerous run down the right side and into the Timbers box, but his cross to the far post found no teammates, and the threat was cleared. In the 15th minute, the Timbers had another good chance when forward Takayuki Suzuki made a steal just outside the Juventus box, but his attempt to hit the upper left hand corner from 10 yards out at a tight angle slipped a yard over the crossbar. Five minutes later the Timbers had another good chance when a scramble in the Juventus box found the ball at the foot of Timbers defender Cameron Knowles, but his attempt to chip the Juventus keeper from 10 yards out was too soft and easily collected. But four minutes later, the Timbers would find the net when Little received a pass from Chris Brown down the left side, then cut back and found Brown at the top of the box, and Brown beat Pinsoglio with a shot to the lower right corner of the net to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Shortly afterwards, Juventus’ Simon Esposito had a good look from the top of the Timbers box, but his shot was stopped by James with an easy save. The teams would each have good chances that were smothered by the opposing keepers, by Serino for Juventus, and by Miguel Guante and Suzuki for the Timbers, but the best chance for either team for the remainder of the half was in the 44th minute when a shot from Brown was bobbled by Pinsoglio but he was able to cover in front of the charging Timbers offense. Brown had one more deep run into the Juventus box during stoppage time, but his shot from a tight angle was over the bar, and the half would end with the Timbers holding a 1-0 lead. The Italian visitors had a great chance to level early in the second half, when Serino had an open header from eight yards out, but it was right at James and easily saved. In the 60th minute, the home side thought they had taken a 2-0 lead on a goal by Suzuki, but he was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed. Four minutes later, Juventus had a great chance to level the score when a cross from the right side found Ciro Immobile wide open near the spot, but he either misjudged the cross or slipped on the turf and barely touched the ball as it went by and the chance was cleared. In the 68th minute, the visitors had another open chance when a free kick was dummied nicely to the foot of Andrea DePaola, but he missed the open chance from only eight yards out and the opportunity was lost. One minute later, the Timbers had their own near miss on a free kick, as the set play from Brown found the head of Suzuki, but his header from six yards out slipped just past the right post. Shortly afterwards, Juventus would have their best chance yet to tie the score when a diagonal run to the top of the box had Denis Russo with a chance close-in, but his chip from 15 yards out went off the crossbar and over. One minute later, the Timbers were again on the attack when Brown’s cutback near the left touchline put his Juventus defender on the turf and he had an open diagonal run into the box, but his shot from 10 yards out was over the crossbar. In the 79th minute, Juventus thought they had leveled the score when a through ball found Fausto Rossi at the top of the box, but he was judged offside before his shot hit the upper right corner of the net. Shortly afterwards, Juventus would see another good chance as a corner kick was dummied to Russo at the top of the Timbers box, but his low blast was a few yards wide left. It would be the last good scoring chance for either side, and at the final whistle, the Portland Timbers held on for the 1-0 win over Juventus Primavera. Jordan James had seven saves for Portland in the winning effort, while Carlo Pinsoglio had six saves for Juventus. At halftime, the offical torch was passed from "Timber Jim" Serrill to "Timber Joey" Webber as the new Timbers mascot officially took over for Timber Jim, who retired at the beginning of the season, and Timber Joey's trial had been successful as the fans have embraced him to carry on the Timbers tradition.
