JUNE 5, 2010 |
Timbers tame the Pumas 3-0 The Portland Timbers U23s and the Kitsap Pumas entered their Saturday match tied at the top of the Premier Development League, both with 5-0-0 records. But it would be the Timbers who would remain at the top after a 3-0 win at Hare Field in Hillsboro. Brent Richards, Brian Ramsey, and Ricky Abrego all scored for the Timbers, while Freddie Braun had two assists, and Jake Gleeson recorded the shutout in goal. Both the Timbers and Pumas had good chances in the first few minutes, with shots by Portland's Roberto Farfan, and Kitsap's Stephen Phillips both being blocked by the opposing defense. In the 4th minute, Portland's Bim Ogunyemi had a good chance off a Jordan Crasilneck free kick, but his header from close-in was too high and easily snared by Kitsap keeper Dustyn Brim. Two minutes later, Brent Richards had a shot from of the top of the Kitsap box blocked, and Brim recovered this one easily as well. In the 9th minute, it was Farfan making a nice run to the top of the Kitsap box, but his shot was right at the Pumas keeper and easily saved. Then in the 23rd minute, a shot by Portland's Tracy Hassen from 20 yards out was barely tipped over the crossbar by Brim. Then after the ensuing corner kick, on a Pumas counterattack, David Gray made a nice run down the right side, but his tight angled shot was smothered by Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. In the 27th minute, the Timbers would take the lead when Richards made a nice run to the corner of the box, cutting back quickly free him from two Kitsap defenders, then hitting a low blast past Brim and off the left post and into the net to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Just before halftime, the Timbers had another good chance as Richards and Brian Ramsey worked a nice give-and-go inside the Kitsap box, with Richards hitting a shot just wide right. The Pumas also had another good look during first half stoppage time, with Gray taking the shot from just outside the Timbers box but hit it wide left, and the Timbers would hold a 1-0 lead at the break. In the opening seconds of the second half, Kitsap had a great chance to equalize when a high cross from Gray found Cameron Hepple open at the far post, but his header was just wide right. Then five minutes later, the Timbers would double their lead when Freddie Braun made a nice run down the left side and made a nice low cross that found Ramsey charging to the far post, and the Timbers forward one-timed the ball into the net from only a yard or two out to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead. The match now became a bit more physical and chippy, and neither team would threaten to score again until the 69th minute when Kitsap had a good free kick chance just outside the Timbers box, but Gray's free kick was right at Gleeson and easily saved. Hepple had another good chance for the Pumas in the 72nd minute when a throw-in came through the box to the Kitsap midfielder, but his shot was blocked by a Timbers defender and out of play. In the 76th minute, after Kitsap's Jamel Wallace had earned a yellow card after attempting to pull the shorts off Timbers midfielder Ricky Abrego, Crasilneck attempted to catch the Kitsap goalkeeper by surprise on the ensuing free kick with a sneaky shot to the near post, but Brim read the play and did well to smother the shot. Two minutes later, Wallace would have a good chance to pull Kitsap back within a goal when he was able to turn on the ball inside the Timbers box, but his shot was blocked wide and out of play. In the 79th minute, it was Brim once again with the great save, as a diving save to his left kept out a nice blast by Braun from 20 yards out. But shortly after, the Timbers widened the lead to three goals when Abrego was played through and behind the Kitsap defense on a nice pass from Braun, and Abrego pulled Brim off his line and then blasted in the third goal past the Kitsap keeper for a 3-0 lead. The Timbers nearly had a fourth goal in stoppage time when Michael Nielson played a nice pass to Abrego again alone on Brim, but though the Timbers midfielder was able to round Brim again, he could not get a clean shot on net, and missed wide left. But the whistle would blow shortly afterwards, and the Timbers U23s moved to the top of the Premier Development League Northwest division with the 3-0 win.
