JUNE 19, 2009 |
Timbers too much for Minnesota in 5-1 rout On a night that will stay in the minds of Timbers fans for many years, five different Timbers players would find the net as the home side would score early and often in a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Thunder in front of 8,111 on a cool night at Portland's PGE Park. George Josten, Takayuki Suzuki, David Hayes, Mandjou Keita, and Scot Thompson would all score for the Timbers, while Ricardo Sanchez would have the lone Thunder goal. It was the first time the Timbers had scored five goals since a 6-1 win over Atlanta on September 8, 2005. Current Timbers defender David Hayes was on the losing side that night. The eleven game unbeaten streak is now the longest within a single season in Timbers USL history, with their longest overall unbeaten streak being a 16 game streak over two seasons from July 28, 2004 to June 28, 2005. It would not take long for the Timbers to get on the board when in just the fourth minute, Brian Farber cut a past across the goal mouth that forward George Josten lunged at and redirected just inside the far post, and before many fans had reached their seats, the Timbers were up 1-0. It was Teddy Bear Toss Night to benefit Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and thousands of teddy bears came streaming out of the stands onto the pitch celebrating the early goal. The visiting Thunder did their best to respond, and had a good chance in the 9th minute when forward Brian Cvilikas made a deep run to the top of the Timbers box, but was just over the bar from 20 yards out. Then five minutes later, the visitors were within inches of tying the score when Rod Dyachnko's blast from just outside the box rattled off the left post but was then cleared by the Timbers defense. Two minutes later, Josten nearly put in his second for the Timbers when he was able to turn on the ball at the top of the Thunder box, but his shot went over the crossbar. Over the next ten minutes, Minnesota's Leonel St. Preux did his best to singlehandedly pull his team level has he would have no less than four chances, but missed high on his first two, and had his next two saved by Timbers goalkeeper Steve Cronin. Then in the 32nd minute, the Timbers would double their lead when Takayuki Suzuki would find space just inside the corner of the box, and one-timed a low shot to the far corner that eluded Thunder goalkeeper Nic Platter, and the Timbers had a 2-0 lead. Six minutes later the Thunder would halve that lead when Ricardo Sanchez's free kick from 30 yards out slipped into the bottom of the near corner past a diving Cronin, and the Timbers lead was down to 2-1. Before the half was over, Josten would gave a breakaway chance saved, and just before the whistle, Cvilikas nearly blocked a clearance ball from Cronin into the Timbers net, but the home side would hold onto the 2-1 lead as the teams went into the locker room for the half. The first good chance for either team in the second half would be in the 51st minute when Portland's Cameron Knowles got his head on a cross near the far post, but his header was just over the bar. After a few more good Timbers chances were shut down by last minute Minnesota defensive stops, Minnesota defender Julius James would grab and spin Timbers forward Mandjou Keita just inside the Timbers box, and center referee Maurizo Laudani would point at the spot. James would get a yellow then a red before the kick could be taken, and David Hayes would calmly put the penalty kick into the upper right corner to give the Timbers a 3-1 lead. Each team would have good headed chances over the next 15 minutes, with each team putting their shots just wide. At about the 72 minute mark, the Timbers started finding more space and were able to apply more pressure, with Suzuki finding Keita for an open header from 10 yards out that was right at the Thunder keeper. Suzuki himself then had a nice breakaway into the box only snuffed out by a nice charging save from Platter. Suzuki had another good chance a few minutes later after a wild sequence of Timbers crosses into the box found the Timbers midfielder with a point blank chance from a very tight angle that Platter was able to stop with his body, with the force of the shot hard enough that it rebounded all the way out over the touchline. The match then turned very ugly with Minnesota's Andres Arango being shown red for shoving Portland's Alex Nimo after the Timbers forward had been pushed to the ground from behind by Sanchez. The Timbers would take advantage of the 11 v 9 situation when Keita headed in a corner from Hayes that went in off the left post to put the Timbers up 4-1. Just into stoppage time, the Timbers would then finish off their five goal night when Scot Thompson fought off a tough challenge to put in a header off a corner from Josh Cameron, hitting off the crossbar then the post before finding the net, and putting the Timbers up 5-1. But another ugly tackle just after the kickoff would have the Thunder down to 8 players as Melvin Tarley was also sent off for knocking down Farber away from the ball. The final whistle would blow seconds later and the Timbers would extend their league unbeaten streak to 11 games, and are now unbeaten in 14 overall including two Open Cup games and an exhibition win over the Club America Reserves. Portland's Steve Cronin and Minnesota's Nic Platter would each record four saves on the Anight.
