Two of the hottest teams in the USL First Division met on Sunday night in Portland, with the Montreal Impact riding a three game winning streak, and the Portland Timbers unbeaten in their past 11 league games, but it would be the Timbers who put a quick halt to the Montreal winning streak as the Timbers would light up the net for their second straight match, this time a 4-0 victory over the Impact in front of 7,783 at Portland's PGE Park. Mandjou Keita would score twice to tie for the lead league in goals with six, while Brian Farber would also score, along with a goal scored from Keita's pressure that was credited as an own goal.

In just the first minute a Montreal backpass was nearly stolen by Brian Farber, as the Impact narrowly avoided a first minute disaster. Montreal would then have the first good chance of the match when Eduardo Sebrango made a nice run down the left side but shot into the left side netting.

The first good scoring chance for the Timbers would pay off with a goal when a corner kick by David Hayes was headed into the upper left side of the net by Mandjou Keita past Montreal goalkeeper Matt Jordan to give the Timbers the lead in the 9th minute.

Montreal's first chance to level the score would be in the 16th minute when Sandro Grande had a nice look from 20 yards out, but his shot was right at Portland goalkeeper Steve Cronin and easily saved. Twelve minutes later, the Impact would come within inches of tying the score when a blast by David Testo beat Cronin but hit squarely off the right post and back out before the Impact midfielder's follow-up was well over the crossbar.

In the 35th minute, a dangerous Montreal corner kick would require a punch-out by Cronin, followed by having to go high to collect a dangerous cross near the far post just seconds later. Five minutes later, Montreal would have another good look on another deep run by Sebrango but the shot was a hard over the bar from a tight angle. But the early Timbers goal was the only score of the half, and they would hold a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Timbers would strike early in the second half as well, when George Josten played a pass from near the top of the box to Keita, who chipped Jordan from 15 yards out to put the Timbers up 2-0. Over the next several minutes, it was a barrage of shots on the Impact goal, with Keita and then Farber forcing reaction saves from Jordan, then in the 56th minute, Josten would get his second assist when he played a nice pass to a charging Farber, who beat Jordon to the near post from eight yards out, and the Timbers had surged to a 3-0 lead.

A 58th minute header by Montreal's Grande was their best chance to keep this from being a blowout, though it was right at Cronin and easily saved. The Timbers nearly pulled out to a four goal lead two minutes later when Josten's header was just a foot or two over the bar.

But in the 64th minute the Timbers would get that four goal lead, thanks to a bad backpass from Montreal's Simon Gatti, which Jordan could not play and it trickled into the Timbers net to give the Timbers a 4-0 lead.

The Impact thought they had pulled a goal back in the 77th minute when a shot from Mauro Biello deflected off Sebrango and over the Timbers keeper and into the net, but Sebrango was judged to have been in an offside position when the ball hit him, and the goal was waved off.

Each team would have close calls in the last 10 minutes, but neither team would score again, and the Timbers would extend their league unbeaten streak to 12 games, and also record their six consecutive home win in league games, only a game short of their all-time best home winning streak.

Steve Cronin recorded two saves in the win, while second-half substitute Brian Visser also recorded a save. Matt Jordan had fives saves in the losing effort.
