MAY 13, 2007 Timbers finally stop Rhinos' charge, win 2-0 The Portland Timbers finally got a victory against a team they had never beaten, the Rochester Raging Rhinos, whom the Timbers were 0-5-1 lifetime against, and had never scored a goal in the run of play against the Rhinos at PGE Park. But that would change quickly as the Timbers got early goals from Andrew Gregor and Leonard Griffin, and that was all they would need for a 2-0 win over the Rhinos in front of a small Mother's Day crowd of 3,041 at PGE Park. The Rhinos were playing their second match in two days, after a 3-1 win in San Francisco over the California Victory on Saturday night. For the Timbers it was their third match in five days, after a 1-0 exhibition win over Club Necaxa of Mexico on Wednesday and a 2-2 come-from-behind draw against Seattle on Friday, both at PGE Park. In the 6th minute, the Timbers nearly stole an early lead when Andrew Gregor found himself open from 20 yards out, but his blast was saved by a diving save by Rochester goalkeeper Chase Harrison. The Timbers would continue to control much of the run of play early, keeping the ball in the Rochester end, and a nice run down the right side by Chris Bagley and flick inside to himself was barely cleared by the Rhinos, the first of several good chances in the next few minutes, but the Timbers never got a shot on goal. In the 19th minute, the Rhinos had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when a pass down the left side from Johnny Menyongar to Scott Palguta allowed Palguta to cross to the far post where a wide-open Hamed Diallo was sitting only a few yards from an open net, but he attempted a side-volley instead of a header or trap and shot, and missed the ball completely, and the threat was easily cleared. Then in the 24th minute, the Timbers would take the lead when off a throw-in from David Hague, Bagley tapped a short pass to Gregor, who perfectly placed a shot from 12 yards into the upper right corner past Harrison for the 1-0 Timbers lead. A minute later, the Rhinos had a good chance to even when they had a free kick just outside the Timbers box, but a low cross was easily cleared by Leonard Griffin, and a few good chances off a following corner kick didn't result in any shots on goal. In the 32nd minute, the Timbers would double their lead when a long ball down the right side to Bagley was dropped back to Gregor, who passed to the center of the pitch to a wide-open Griffin, who had several seconds to measure a shot and hit a blast from 35 yards out that bent left-to-right and into the upper right corner, and the unlikely blast from Griffin had given the Timbers a 2-0 lead. About three minutes later, the Rhinos would get their only other good chance of the first half, but wasn't even one of their own shots as a near own-goal off a Timbers head off a Rochester cross forced a diving save from Timbers goalkeeper Josh Wicks, and would probably be his toughest save of the night. In the 39th minute, a nice pass from Gregor sprung Bryan Jordan, who nearly had a breakaway but a nice play on the retreat by Rhinos defender Stephen Shirley-Black prevented Jordan getting a one-on-one with the Rhinos keeper. Just before the half, the Timbers had two great chances, the first off a Gregor corner kick when a Hague shot was parried wide by Harrison. The second a few seconds later when a Justin Thompson header was cleared off the line by a Rochester defender. The whistle would blow seconds later and the Timbers had a 2-0 halftime lead. Just a few minutes into the second half, the Timbers nearly widened their lead to three goals when a Gregor corner kick was headed by Scot Thompson, then off the leg of Justin Thompson, before being collected by Harrison. But inside the next minute, Rochester had a great chance off a corner kick by Matthew Delicate, a Rhinos header towards the left post was headed off the line by Tom Poltl. In the 53rd minute, the Timbers had another good free kick chance outside the top left corner of the box, and the attempted free kick by Gregor would hit Rochester defender Chris Aloisi in the head, and Aloisi would be down for several minutes with what appeared to be a concussion, though he would eventually leave the field under his own power. The Timbers would begin to change their strategy a bit, with Bagley dropping back into a midifield position, and Jordan often the only Timbers striker. The Rhinos would start getting more possession, and taking more risks as often they only had two defenders back, but their chances would still be tough to earn against the big Timbers backline. As a result, the game would be much less wide-open than the first half had been, and the Rhinos would collect five yellows in the second half, the final one resulting in an ejection for a second yellow for T-Bone Bonseu late in the match. After withstanding a lot of Rochester possession without giving up any good scoring chances, the Timbers had their final great chance in the 83rd minute when a Gregor free kick from just outside the top left corner of the box was kept out by a diving save by Harrison on the bending shot. A minute later, the Timbers got another chance when Jordan drove down the left side of the box and his cross to the far post was just a bit too near the goal for Luke Kreamalmayer, who was charging to the far post. A few minutes later, off a quick Rhinos restart, a few headers created a good through header to Danny Kramer, but Wicks was able to snatch the ball just before Kramer was able to put his foot on it. Neither team would seriously threaten again, the Timbers would emerge with their first-ever win over Rochester, and first goals against the Rhinos at home in the run of play, and it all added up to a solid 2-0 win. Josh Wicks was credited with two saves in the winning effort, and Chase Harrison had four for the Rhinos.
