Timbers deliver a Sound beating, 3-1 over Seattle The new-look Portland Timbers put their three game unbeaten streak on the line tonight at PGE Park against their rival the Seattle Sounders, and emerged with a solid 3-1 win over the Sounders in front of 6,149 fans. Alejandro Gutierrez, Mamba Chisoni, and Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar all tallied their second goals of the year as they each put in a goal for the Timbers, while Zach Scott had the lone Sounders goal. It would be a pretty wide open match for much of the night, and the Timbers had the first good look at goal, when in the 6th minute, Mamba Chisoni had a nice run down the right side, but his shot from just inside the corner of the box was just wide right. In the 12th minute, the Sounders would have a similar chance when Andrew Gregor played a nice pass to Gabe Sturm, and he had an open look as he crossed into the box, but missed his shot well wide to the left. In the 15th minute the Timbers would break through when Mike Randoph played a give-and-go with Chisoni, and dashed to the line and crossed to a wide open Alejandro Gutierrez, who had enough time to control the ball as it popped up to his chest, then back to his feet, then buried it into the bottom right corner past Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander, who got a touch on the ball, but not enough to keep it out of the net and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead. One minute later, the Sounders nearly leveled the score when an attempted clearance instead rebounded to Seattle's Cam Weaver, who was wide open 15 yards out, but didn't appear to realize how much time he had and instead one-timed a shot right into Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders' chest for the easy save. In the 22nd minute, a nice pass from Portland's Byron Alvarez had Luke Kreamalmeyer in alone behind the Sounders defense, but Eylander left his box, as he did several times on this evening, and a slide tackle knocked the ball off Kreamalmeyer and wide, and though the Timbers midfielder was able to chip a shot towards the net, it was a few yards over and landed in the netting on the top of the goal. Five minutes later, on a Timbers corner kick, Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar found Scot Thompson open six yards from the near post, but his header was just over the bar. In the 32nd minute the Sounders would pull level, when after a free kick 45 yards out, Seattle defender Seyi Abolaji played a nice cross from the right side that found Zach Scott unmarked at the far post, as he slipped in behind Weaver, and Scott headed nicely into the far side of the net for the tally, and the Sounders had pulled even at 1-1. The Timbers would not take long to respond, when about a minute later, the Timbers had a 4-on-2 break started near midfield, and Alcaraz-Cuellar played a soft pass across to Chisoni, who buried a one-timer into the top of the net from 15 yards out, and the Timbers had re-taken the lead. In the 41st minute, the Sounders would get another good chance when a dipping shot from 30 yards out by Gregor nearly slipped past Saunders, who knocked it wide and out of bounds. This would be the last good chance of the first half for either team, and the Timbers held a 2-1 halftime lead. In the 57th minute, the Timbers came within inches of doubling their lead when Kreamalmeyer was able to get behind the last Sounders defender and a charging Eylander was able to get a fingertip on the shot, just enough to tip it inches past the post to keep the Sounders deficit at only a single goal. Six minutes later, it was Chisoni who sprinted past the Seattle defenders to be in all alone against Eyelander, but he could not stop the ball bouncing on the turf and pushed a shot well wide right from the top of the box. In the 81st minute, the Sounders would have one of their better chances to level the score when a diagonal cross into the box managed to get through and bounce twice while eluding three Seattle attackers as it trickled through the crease and out of bounds untouched. The Timbers would finally get their insurance goal in the 87th minute when Alcaraz-Cuellar's pass sent Alvarez through on a run down the right side, and the Timbers strike crossed the ball perfectly back into the run of Alcaraz-Cuellar, who headed the ball into the left side of the net from eight yards out, and the Timbers had a 3-1 lead, which would end up being the final score as neither team seriously threatened again. Josh Saunders was credited with three saves in the win, while Chris Eylander was credited with one save.
