One mistake proves costly, Timbers lose 1-0 to Whitecaps The Portland Timbers introduced a squad where more five of the starters were brand new players, and all in all played well in a pretty even match, but in the end, the result was one Timbers fans have come to expect in Vancouver, as the Timbers fell 1-0 to the Whitecaps in front of 5,722 at Swangard Stadium. Early in the match, it was all Whitecaps as they put several dangerous crosses deep into the Timbers box, and had several shots that were just barely wide right or left, but were not forcing saves from Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders. The first time they actually would get a shot on goal would be in the 17th minute, and it would be the only shot they would need as a diagonal pass from near midfield by Jason Jordan to Joe Gjertsen had the Whitecaps striker breaking in alone, and though Timbers defender Scot Thompson was able to retreat and challenge for the ball just as Gjertsen shot, the challenge did not stop the shot, or the deflection may have come back off the Whitecaps forward, but the result was the same as the shot slipped past Saunders and just inside the left post, and the Whitecaps had a 1-0 lead. One minute later, Gjertsen had another good chance when his shot from 20 yards out was a yard or two wide left. For the remainder of the half, the play was more even, but the best Timbers chance in the first half was ended when Troy Ready collided with Whitecaps keeper Josh Wicks in the box, and though the Timbers appealed for a penalty on the collision, it was the Timbers forward who was yellow carded by referee Steve De Piero. The second half was controlled by the Timbers, but they were having trouble getting a shot on net, despite dominating possession. Their best chance to equalize would come in the 55th minute when a cross from Luke Kraemelmeyer found Drew McAthy open in the box, but his shot from 15 yards out was right into Wicks' chest. The Timbers would get another good chance in the 63rd minute when Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar's shot from 18 yards out slipped just past the right post. The Timbers would continue to control possession for much of the rest of the match, but Alcaraz-Cuellar's shot would be the last good chance for either teams, though both teams had headers go just past the post, by the Whitecaps in the 77th minute, then by the Timbers in the 80th. Josh Saunders would record one save for the Timbers in the losing effort, while Whitecaps goalkeeper Josh Wicks recorded four saves in the winning effort.
