Timbers can't hold lead, settle for draw with 'Caps The Portland Timbers opened their 2006 home season at PGE Park on Friday, and a player who didn't even appear on the team roster earlier in the day would be the Timbers hero, as Chad Bartlome would give the Timbers an early lead, but it would not hold up as Vancouver's Tony Donatelli would draw the Whitecaps level in the second half, and the match would end a 1-1 draw in front of 5,448 fans. Two weeks ago in Vancouver, it was the Whitecaps who controlled the match early, but on this night, it was the Timbers who had the better early chances, with Byron Alvarez nearly getting his foot to a bouncing ball in front of Whitecaps goalkeeper Josh Wicks in the 6th minute. Two minutes later, the Whitecaps had their first good chance with Jason Jordan getting a good chance near the keeper's near post, but the shot had no pace and Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders would make an easy save. In the 16th minute, new Timbers signee Chad Bartlome had a good chance as his header from near the penalty spot was headed just wide right. One minute later, Alvarez would have a good chance as well, but his shot from 15 yards out was across the goalmouth and just wide to the left. In the 21st minute, the Whitecaps had a great scoring chance as a rebound found Geordie Lyall wide open as he charged into the box, but was unable to put the shot on net as it went well wide to the left. Within the next minute, the Timbers would respond with their first goal of the 2006 season as Wicks' save on a shot by Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar was not controlled by the Caps keeper, and Bartlome was able to knock home the rebound, and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead. Lyall had another good chance for the Whitecaps just two minutes later, but his open shot from near the top of the box was just over the Timbers bar. The Whitecaps had difficulty putting shots on net, though they were getting good chances by this time of the half, and Jeff Clarke would have the same problem in the 27th minute, as his shot from near the top of the box was well wide to the left. In the 34th minute, a shot that initially appeared a poor one for the Timbers nearly shocked the Whitecaps keeper, as a shot from Luke Kreamelmeyer from 30 yards out appeared way too high, but dipped drastically and slipped only a yard or two over the bar. The Whitecaps would have the last good chance of the half, as Adrian Cann had a chance for a quick shot near the post from only five or six yards out, but a reaction diving save from Saunders smothered the shot, and the half would end with the Timbers holding a 1-0 lead. The Timbers lead would not last, as the first good Vancouver chance of the second half would be enough to even the match, as the Whitecaps jumped on a poor pass in the Timbers half, and Martin Nash's cross was headed out of the box by Portland's Scot Thompson, but it fell right to the foot of Caps striker Tony Donatelli, who blasted a shot from 20 yards into the upper left hand corner, a shot Saunders had no chance at, and the Whitecaps had leveled the match at 1-1. In the 70th minute, the Whitecaps had another good opportunity when Nash was open near the top of the box, but his shot dribbled wide left. The Timbers would respond with a good chance of their own one minute later, but Kreamelmeyer's shot from 25 yards out was smothered easily by Wicks. In the 76th minute, a dangerous high bouncing ball into the box by the Whitecaps caused trouble for the Timbers keeper, but he was able to jump high over Sita-Taty Matendo and end the threat. In the 81st minute, the Whitecaps had Alfredo Valente breaking in behind the Timbers defense for a few seconds, but Thompson was able to retreat and break up the shot before it could go on net. The Whitecaps had most of the late opportunities in this match, their last being in the 87th minute when Valente turned on a shot that rebounded off the inside of defender Jacobi Goodfellow's leg as it went between his legs, but was collected easily by Saunders. It would be the last chance of the match as this one would end in a 1-1 draw. Caps goalkeeper Josh Wicks recorded four saves, while Timbers keeper Josh Saunders had three.
